Oye Latino! We can say we had a successful year: Several events
reflected our inclusion and well established relationship within the Wellington community
and ¡Oye Latino! Expanding our audience with La Otra Edisión on Sundays and our Web Site
here: oyelatino.co.nz developed by Armando Baudín. OUR FOLLOWING 2010 IS PROMISING.

¡Oye Latino! La Otra Edición
On Sundays Armando Baudín and German Renthel are generating a community dynamic
style of creative improvisation and the best on our Latin Music as well as our best
locals. Both programs in a alliance helping each other
¡Oye Latino!
On Thursdays Jorge Herrera directs and focus on alternative media. He emphasize
on Culture and Politics on peoples struggles for liberation in Latin America. Takes the
challenge on letting Latinos and New Zealanders interested in those issues to know about
mayor events on that process. As we pointed out below, Indigenous peoples movements in
America has been our most heart-felt connection to our continent. We add our nourishing
wealth of culture in many different expressions presented locally and overseas examples.
On Thursdays our sponsors are Trade Aid, Peoples Coffee, Havana Coffee Works and Havana
Bar. We always include Latin American Support Committee as part of ourselves. Without all
of you we couldn’t be on air.
This program couldn’t happen without the solid support by Armando Baudín and the
collaboration from Josué Tapia, both on the controls as well as the Wellington Latino
community affairs, and also in our Web Site design and photographs. We are better
together.
LOCALLY ON THURSDAYS
¡Oye Latino! On WOMAD
We fortunately covered several interviews to outstanding musicians presented
at WOMAD 2009 festival, 13th to 15th March such as: from “Arte Kanela”to
Mikidache, Moana & “the Tribe”, Seckou Keita, Ska Cubano, Dona Rosa &
Ensemble. We enriched our programme with these reporting, so, we were able to shear with
Access Radio our interviews to be broadcasted in other programs. This experience opened up
our views on expanding our cultural exchange to other communities. We will continue on
that path.
Trade Aid Campaign
We participate in the Trade Aid Campaign to turn Wellington in a fair trade
city, calling our audience, friends and interviewing Christian Pilkington, director of
Wellington Trade Aid Store. And now Wellington became a fear trade city. That is a great
success. On February 2010 there will be celebrations at Civic Centre.
We are part of it.
Che Guevara’s Birthday
¡Oye Latino! Produced the Che Guevara’s birthday celebration, event on
13 June at Snt. Johns Hall in coordination with The Cuban Embassy, the Che vive committee.
Supported by the Wellington Cuban Friendly Society. Wellington Palestinian Committee,
Sponsor by Fidel’s Café and Havana Coffee Works and generous koha at the entrance,
It was a very successful event: We provided food cooked by the chief cook from Flying
Burrito Brothers, Antonio Gonzales. Performances were more than we expected in a very
friendly environment.
1º November Day of the Death Growing Experience
Successful for the second year we produce the Day of the Death at the
Wellington Museum City & Sea the 1rst of November, with a good number of volunteers.
Our Beautiful community altar was created by Tanya Norman, with the collaboration of
:Mayra from Perú, Andy from NZ, Alejandro from Panama, Lorenza, Andria, Alicia, Jorge and
Lourdes from México This altar was dedicated to our Tradition of celebrating the Death in
this time it was proposed Emiliano Zapata, leader from the South region in the Mexican
Revolution (1910). Sub commander Ramona from the EZLN (Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion
Nacional) in Chiapas, South East Estate of México. Mercedes Sosa from Argentina very well
loved Singer all over Latin America. Finally We Honour the Death people from Honduras
killed by the militaty on the Coup’de tat in Honduras
Before the procession at the first floor in the Museum We celebrated painting our faces
skull like directed by Lucas and preparing by German
Procession on the Wellington Streets with a good number of people preceded by Carlos
Navarrete Singing all the way until La Bodega Bar after visiting an altar on Trade Aid on
Victoria Street. There were two local papers publishing this event, before it happens and
after it happens.
2010
We received the invitation by Wellington Museum City & Sea for continuing
producing this event the following 2010. Including that we are participating with Ethnic
Affairs & Museum of Wellington City & Sea on the Exhibition Project of Cultural
Rituals & Practices Surrounding Death for the months of September for performances and
October until February for exhibitions.
We appreciate very much the Wellington Museum City& Sea’s support and welcoming

CULTURAL SECTION:
POETRY
Our programme kept attention on International remarkable events in the
American continent Such as the International Poetry Festival in Medellin Colombia founded
in 1991, this 2009 from July 4th to 11th. This festival won the 2006 Alternative Novel
Price. This is the greatest poetry festival ever. We presented excerpts of poets
participating. As well, we presented also poetry from Pablo Neruda (Chile), Jaime Sabines
(México) in his own voice, Rosario Murillo (Nicaragua), Thiago de Mello (Brazil) in his
own voice Nicolas Guillen (Cuba) in his own voice, Alfonso Quijada Urías (El Salvador),
Mario Benedetti (Uruguay) commemorated since recently he past away and many more. Readings
from (Uruguay) Eduardo Galeano’s books and interviews are often red as citations or
quotes in our programme.
MUSIC
Artists like Silvio Rodriguez (Cuba) (honoured in several countries), Mercedes
Sosa (Argentina) (we honoured her in our altar on the Day of the Death since she past away
recently) All in Latin America Honoured her. Her music has been part of our regular
programme. Lila Downs (Mexico/US), Leon Gieco (Argentina), Manu Chao (France/Spain)
Ernesto Cabour (Bolivia), Susana Baca (Perú), Oscar Chavez (México) and many more
internationally well known political artists as well as young popular artist from all
Latin America, had been part of our programme in ¡Oye Latino!
We also presented from the extensive musical production of CONACULTA, indigenous popular
cultures: indigenous poetry an songs from all over México and Latin America thanks to the
support of Fernando Hijar General Coordinator in México City
NEWS COVERAGE
Peoples struggles for independence and non violent movements:
Our attention was grabbed by the Situation in Honduras Since 28 of June by the Military
Coup d’Etat when they took President Manuel Zelaya that night (in pyjamas) to Costa
Rica. We followed every days happenings, capturing on the wabe, declarations by a large
number of participants: leaders and public testimonies, and broadcasted in ¡Oye Latino!.
The situation in Honduras is changing dynamics of power in Latin America in a new
situation that may affect profoundly the peoples struggle for liberation
The Indigenous peoples movements in America has been our most heart-felt connection to our
continent political events. We produced a large number of them. What happened in Perú,
Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador, Chile and Mexico versus what is going on in Bolivia and
Venezuela besides what the future revealed, it is going to be expected significant
changes.
Indigenous peoples all along our American Continent have been harass by governments, like
the assassinations in Peru and Colombia, Chile, Guatemala as well as in Mexico in a
greatest scale. We cover those events in ¡Oye Latino! As one of our priorities. In
contrast with the above mentioned we celebrated the progress by the government in Bolivia
with Evo Morales the first indigenous president in History in Latin America, representing
his people. The hopes created by the unity among Latin American Countries growing in
independence from the US domination
We followed the struggles in Cuba, since we maintain good relationship with the Ambassador
of Cuba, we have been denouncing the significant aspects from the Cuban struggle for
keeping their independence. Such as the blatant cases as The Cuban 5 with 11 YEARS OF
UNJUST IMPRISONMENT IN US JAILS and The Commercial Blockade against Cuba SINCE 1962 in
contrast to their accomplishments in health and education besides great difficulties.
The interaction among Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and
Bolivia as sensitive and important as they are for de transformation of the Latin
America’s dominated countries by the elite countries in the world. The interaction
for new politics of alliances among the continent excluding the USA challenges our
perspectives for our future
In all we included as many live interviews and documental interviews from the web. Our
Wellington community (Latino and Kiwi) provided a great contribution to our programme, to
the point that we had a Kiwi correspondent journalist in Honduras, sending us interviews
shown on the 26 November about the de facto government trying to implement elections on
the face of significant International disapproval. Honduran peoples repression and
protesting in the streets is an ongoing signal. We are expecting news from the January
taking power to the Honduran presidency by the November manipulated elections directed by
Micheletti
We presented continuously the most significant voices from the struggle of peoples
liberation such as Noam Chomsky (USA), Eduardo Galeano (Uruguay), José Saramago
(Portugal), Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (Argentina), Subcomandante Marcos (México), Evo
Morales (Bolivia), Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) Fidel Castro (Cuba) and many more such as
community leaders from each of the movements, as well as representatives from different
struggles in Latin America.
About the International Poetry Festival of Medellin
On the public of the XIX Festival (we would like you to know)
The public of the Festival grew in quantity and quality in 2009. Surveys showed that it
regularly reads books of poems. The social and cultural impact of the event also increase
because of the greater access of people to the information about the Festival, now with a
grater TV (live and pre-recorded broadcasts), radio, press and Internet coverage. The Web
site of the Festival reached more than 40,000 browsers during the last month and it is now
read in 135 countries in two languages.
The evaluation also took note of the constant and deep solidarity of the world community
of poets with the International Poetry Festival of Medellin, its strong relation with the
organization of the event and the high participation in its history, that this year
reached the number of 915 poets from 144 nations of all continents, which certainly places
it as the poetry festival with the widest geographical coverage in the world.
The evaluation approved the significant extension of the International Poetry Festival of
Medellín to 16 towns in Antioquía and ten other Colombian cities, as well as the
carrying out of 130 activities: Individual and collective readings of poems, workshops and
poetry courses, lectures and conversations between poets and the public. (report from the
